Why I Don’t Believe in Design Trends (and What I Do Instead)

Let’s talk about trends.
They're everywhere—Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok. It’s never been easier to scroll through hundreds of beautiful spaces, save a dozen ideas, and think, “Yep, that’s what I want”.
And while that kind of access can be helpful, I’d also be the first to say, “I don’t believe in designing around trends”.
Trends come and go. They’re often more about what’s “in” at the moment than what actually works for you. Just because you’re seeing the same tile or sofa or cabinet colour over and over doesn’t mean it belongs in your home—or that you’ll still like it a year from now.
The better approach? Listen to your gut. Learn what you actually like. Think about what matters to you in your space, how you want to feel when you’re in it, what you need it to do for your daily life.
That’s why in every project we do, we start with a concept. A clear vision rooted in your values, lifestyle, and personal taste. That concept becomes the lens we look through for every decision, from layout and finishes to lighting and furniture. Not just what’s trending, but what feels right for you.
It also helps keep things cohesive. Without that kind of foundation, it’s easy to end up with a space that’s a mashup of ideas pulled from everywhere but grounded in nothing.
That doesn’t mean you have to ignore trends completely. Sometimes a popular design idea resonates deeply and that’s totally fine. But it should be because you love it, not because you saw it on five Instagram accounts last week.
At the end of the day, good design isn’t about chasing what’s new. It’s about creating something that lasts—something that fits your life, your style, and still feels like you even as the trends fade.
And that, in my opinion, is always worth sticking to.
